This is a hugely special & significant year for the City of London Solicitor's Company and the Lord Mayor's Show - we are the Mother Company to the new Lord Mayor, Alderman Vincent Keaveny who served as Master of the Company in 2014/15 and Sheriff Alison Gowman is a Liveryman of our Company.

Our float carries two big messages - firstly thanking key workers for everything they have done during the pandemic and secondly, paying tribute to the new Lord Mayor's Irish heritage. Our amazing costumes include giant key workers and appreciation for those who kept London buses and tube trains running. Look out for our huge "care angel" signifying the smaller, everyday acts of kindness which were so important to everyone during the pandemic. The new Lord Mayor came to the City of London as a young Irish law graduate so we acknowledge his background with a range of celtic-themed costumes.

A huge “thank you” goes to Mahogany Carnival who provide us with amazing, colourful & crowd-pleasing costumes and to our participants who all work for City of London law firms. We're also pleased to have Cadets from the Solicitors' Company's affiliated Unit, the 71st London Irish Rifles, are walking with us. Finally, in this 90th anniversary year of the first guide dog partnership, look out for Guide Dog Cora, admitted in 2017 as the City of London’s first and only Free-Dog.

These are companies granted livery status after 1926. Although this now covers 95 years, in the whole history of Livery Companies this is considered the modern period. Today's entry features a double- decker bus with representatives (usually the Master and Wardens in full Livery) from 27 of the Modern Livery Companies.

The Worshipful Company of Coachmakers & Coach Harness Makers entry is centred around the Millennium Coach, a traditional style Road Coach built from scratch in 2001. It is drawn by four horses with the Master Coachmaker and her guests riding atop, accompanied by coachman, groom and hornblower.

The coach was built by Fenix Carriages (fenixcarriages.co.uk) in a traditional manner, with construction taking nearly 3,000 hours over a 15-month period. The body is constructed from seasoned ash and all the ironwork for the chassis was hand-forged by Mark Broadbent and his team. It was finished to its full glory with over eighteen coats of paint.

The Millennium Coach is currently displayed, on behalf of the owners, as part of the collection at Fenix Carriages, Devon.

Walking alongside the coach you will see a flag bearer, carrying a flag emblazoned with the Coachmakers crest, and Liverymen in their livery gowns.

Our entry highlights the survival of these traditional coach making skills into the modern day and the importance of maintaining them through apprentices, ensuring these are passed onto the next generation.

This is a core focus of the Coachmakers, our mission statement being “an active livery investing in young people”. We aim to achieve this by, amongst other things, scholarships in the automotive and aerospace sectors – the modern equivalents of our forebears industries as well as supporting a wide range of apprentices in both the traditional and modern trades.

We are going “Purple4Polio” for our End Polio Now campaign in the Parade to mark the fact that we have never been closer to making history and achieving Rotary’s goal of a polio-free world.

There have been just two cases of wild poliovirus worldwide this year since January in just two countries: one in Pakistan and one in Afghanistan. This compares to a thousand cases of polio a day in 125 countries when Rotary started its campaign to rid the world of polio in 1985.

Working with our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, cases have been cut by 99.99 per cent.

The Rotary “Purple4Polio” campaign is so-called because purple is the colour of the dye placed on the little finger on the left hand of a child to show that they have been immunised against polio.

Rotary was started in 1905 and is one of the world’s leading humanitarian service organisations, with 1.2m members in over 200 countries. Rotary members are determined to tackle the world’s biggest issues, including promoting peace, fighting disease, leading the campaign to eradicate polio, supporting the environment, education and more. Rotary also runs many youth projects.

The young musicians from the World Heart Beat Music Academy with our entry will be playing New Orleans jazz on top of a vintage horse drawn Omnibus.

The Bank of England is the second-oldest central bank in the world. Founded in 1694 as a ‘national bank’, we operate for the greater good of the people of the United Kingdom by maintaining confidence in the currency. We also make sure that banks and other financial institutions are run in a safe and sound way.
Some of our other responsibilities include:
• designing and distributing banknotes for use throughout the UK, making sure that they are easy to recognise but hard to copy
• setting the UK’s main interest rate (known as the Bank Rate), which helps to control rising prices
• looking after around 400,000 bars of gold on behalf of the government, banks, and central banks. These bars are stored deep inside our vaults
• supervising banks and financial institutions and making sure they are meeting our requirements.
The image above was taken in 2019, when we celebrated our 325th anniversary.
This year, our float includes a model of the Bank of England with an oversized replica of the new polymer £50 featuring Alan Turing (released back in June), which completes our first set of polymer notes. Some of our staff are dressed as characters who appear on our banknotes and will be walking next to the float. And we can’t forget the gold bars which are being pulled along bullion trollies from the 1930’s!

Next up, we have Britannia waving from her carriage. She is the Bank of England’s logo and has been on every one of our notes since our foundation in 1694. A QR code on the side of the carriage links to the Bank of England Museum’s website, where you can find out more about our history and objects in our collection.

At the back of the procession, we will wave flags which represent our chosen charities of the year: Demelza, Carers UK and World Wildlife Fund.

You may notice some of our participants wearing ‘pinks’ – this is the uniform worn traditionally by the Bank of England’s Gatekeepers and stewards. The shade of pink is known as ‘Houblon pink’ after our first Governor, John Houblon. You might also spot the odd penguin – a surprising addition, but we included them because during the lockdown in early 2021, our caterers donated fish from the Bank of England’s restaurant to ZSL London Zoo to feed the penguins.

Young people play a huge role in both Aldgate and the Eastern City. In Aldgate, there is a vast population of school children, students and young professionals in a deeply urban environment, and in the Eastern City, young people are provided with employment and opportunity. It’s vital that we nurture, inspire and encourage young people in the City, providing them with hope and opportunities for the future.

The Aldgate and Eastern City float is an homage to young people, reflecting their creativity and independence and showing that the City is a welcoming and inclusive place. The community has been heavily involved in the design and build. You’ll see individual shops inspired by Petticoat Lane, which have all been devised and designed by school children; trees, symbolising the growth and connectivity of the area, with community-made 'fruits of aspiration' hanging from them, and a silhouette of the area’s iconic skyline.

Sustainability has been an important consideration when designing the float, with the trailer being towed by an eco-vehicle and recycled materials being used where possible. Many materials will also be reused for the Aldgate in Winter exhibition.
