The Worshipful Companies of Coachmakers & Coach Harness Makers and the Carmen are delighted to bring Bluebird K7 to the Lady Mayor’s Show.

Bluebird K7 is a jet engined hydroplane that was piloted by the speed ace Donald Campbell. Between 1955 and 1964 he broke the outright World Water Speed Record on seven separate occasions in Bluebird K7, four of them on Coniston Water in Cumbria.

In 1964 Donald Campbell became the only person ever to break the world water and the world land speed record in the same calendar year.

On 4 January 1967 Campbell made his final run in Bluebird K7, intending to push his existing World Water Speed record from 276 mph to 300 mph on Coniston Water. But tragically, he died in the attempt.

Bluebird was recovered from the lake in 2001 and after a lengthy restoration, she was returned to Coniston in 2024 to be displayed in the Ruskin Museum. The roads leading to the village were lined with well-wishers and the streets were packed with people celebrating K7’s home coming. It was then revealed that Bluebird K7 would run again on Coniston Water in 2026.

In October 2024 K7 was on show at Royal Motor Yacht Club in Poole, The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu and then Samlesbury Hall in Lancashire to celebrate the 70th anniversary of its build.

In November 2024, two 101 Orpheus engines, slightly different from the original 701 engine that powered the boat in the 1966/67 world record attempt, were sent to North Weald in Essex to be checked and for any remedial work to be done.

On 22nd of November it was announced that for K7’s return to the water in 2026, she would be piloted by Australian Dave Warby, son of Water Speed World Record holder, Ken Warby MBE. His reserve will be RAF pilot Flight Lt David-John Gibbs from Grantham, Lincolnshire.

Sponsors and supporters of her return include The Coachmakers, Blick Rothenberg, Babcock, Starboard Hotels, Lockton, Hothouse Media, Steeles and Barzilay Associates.

Just ahead of Bluebird K7 you will have heard the Surbiton RBL Youth Marching Band premiering a specially composed piece of music – The Bluebird K7 March – written by the Clerk to the Coachmakers, Lt Col Craig Hallatt.
