The Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths is proud to be the Mother Company of The Right Honourable The Lord Mayor Alderman Alastair King DL. We received our first Charter from Queen Elizabeth I in 1571 and the origins of the Company can be traced back to the craft guild of St Eloy in the 13th-century City of London. Today, we pride ourselves on actively supporting the blacksmith’s craft: enabling new talent with bursaries for blacksmithing students, while promoting the renewal and growth of our ancient craft through our thriving awards programme. The Company enjoys the benefits of a diverse membership including many who are or have been active in the craft. Our float has been designed and built by master craftsmen who are members of the Livery, our associates and the students whom we support.

Leading the group is the magnificent Millennium Coach, a superb replica road coach made by and driven by the Coachmakers’ Renter Warden, Mark Broadbent of Fenix Carriages. Construction took 3,500-man hours during a 15-month period. Everything was made on site at Fenix including wheels, springs, ironwork, and the body work and trim.
Its immaculately painted finish is in the traditional manner of a road coach. In all 18 coats of paint were applied along with 15 books gold leaf. Atop the Coach is Master Coachmaker, his Wardens, Clerk and guests.
Following behind are several waking groups consisting of the Worshipful Companies of Coachmakers & Coach Harness Makers, Arbitrators, Broderers and the Guild of Investment Managers.

Swans also play an important part in the history of the Vintners; the Company having been granted the Royal privilege to own mute swans over 500 years ago. The Company exercises this right on the River Thames and every July takes part in the ancient tradition of Swan Upping – the annual census of swans. It also supports three swan sanctuaries on the Thames.

The British Liver Trust, now merged with the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, is the only charity in the UK for everyone affected by a liver condition. We offer up-to-date information, support, and advocate for better services and care for patients.

Our Love Your Liver campaign encourages the best possible liver health for all by encouraging prevention, raising awareness of the risk factors and promoting early detection.

Organisation’s origins and aims
Founded in 1988 by Dame Sheila Sherlock, a world-renowned liver specialist, the British Liver Trust is the UK’s leading liver health charity working to improve liver health for all and supporting those affected by liver disease or cancer.
People of all ages are affected by liver disease and with over a hundred different conditions affecting both adults and children, the spectrum of liver diseases is vast and varied.
We are determined to achieve real change in liver health by:
• increasing awareness of liver disease and its risk factors
• providing information and support to those affected
• working with healthcare professionals
• campaigning for earlier detection and better treatment and working in partnership to drive up standards of care and encourage more research
Recent achievements/milestones
In April this year, the British Liver Trust and Children’s Liver Disease Foundation merged to form a single charity, with the goal of increasing awareness and support for patients and families affected by liver disease across the UK. The merger also aims to enhance advocacy for policy change, campaign more effectively for improved patient care, and foster greater collaboration on research.
Our flagship campaign, Love Your Liver, is designed to raise awareness of the risk factors for liver disease and identify individuals at risk through our Love Your Liver roadshow. The British Liver Trust’s mobile scanning unit travels nationwide, offering free liver scans without a doctor’s referral. These roadshows help people assess their risk of developing liver disease and provide guidance on how to improve liver health. In 2023, the British Liver Trust visited over 20 locations across the UK, scanning more than 2,000 people. Nearly 10% of attendees had scans that revealed potential indicators of liver disease.
This year, we showcased our roadshow at Westminster, Holyrood and Stormont, raising awareness among policymakers and advocating for stronger action on liver health.
Our Love Your Liver Screener provides a way for anyone to check their liver health by assessing their risk online… Finding out your risk of liver disease only takes a few minutes and it could be the most important thing you do today. Over 380,000 people have taken our screener to date.
Float design, theme and costumes/outfits
The British Liver Trust’s Love Your Liver unit is proudly joining the mayor’s parade, led by a giant liver. The outside unit features important messages and photos about liver health, alongside simple, practical advice on raising awareness and reducing key risk factors. This vibrant display aims to engage the public and promote ways to improve liver health.
Representing your organisation in the procession
As well as Jonathan, the unit will be flanked by patients who have benefitted from the charity’s support. Paul’s life was saved with a liver transplant and he is now passionate about raising awareness of preventable liver disease, Louis who was diagnosed with liver disease at birth and is now waiting for a liver transplant, and Rebecca, a keen runner who doesn’t let her autoimmune condition stop her from taking part in the London Marathon and many other endurance races.

Patient stories

Patients, Rebecca, Louis, Paul and Lucia can share their experience of liver disease and the support they have received from the charity.

Lucia’s story shared by her parents David and Rachel

In November 2007, our 8-year-old daughter, Lucia, was plunged into the unexpected turbulence of liver illness. Within two weeks she was on the urgent transplant list and, fortunately, gifted a successful transplant. We were skillfully and compassionately taken through it all by the team in Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

From a standing start we learned about the medical and psychological effects of liver conditions, particularly autoimmune hepatitis, and organ transplants. CLDF were there to accompany, inform and support. It started a long relationship with CLDF to which Lucia, through a further two transplants, was deeply committed.
Her first public presentation on organ transplants (aged 10) was at her fundraising event for Big Yellow Friday. There were many more presentations and fundraisers to come.

A week before her third transplant, Lucia began Live Loudly Donate Proudly, a campaign promoting education, communication, and conversation about organ donation.

We, Rachel and David, her parents, and Alice, her older sister, accompanied Lucia through all her endeavours, given from her heart full of gratitude and life lived with joy and enthusiasm. Recovery from her fourth transplant proved too much, and Lucia died in May 2020.

We continue her commitment to promoting and normalising conversations about organ donation, its complexities and opportunities. We are proud to follow Lucia’s footsteps in support of CLDF and BLT and honoured to be invited to play a part as Ambassadors.

Paul's story

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 15 years ago and then fatty liver disease because of my unhealthy diet. By 2021 I was in a lot of pain, had diarrhoea and no appetite. In June 2022 I collapsed and started bleeding out of my mouth and ended up in hospital for two weeks, including eight days in intensive care. Then my stomach started hurting and growing and I would have to go to hospital every two weeks to have 12 litres of fluid drained from it. I was also having falls but couldn’t get up because of the amount of fluid on my stomach.

I was put on the liver transplant list in March 2023, but my consultant told me I only had a 50/50 chance of surviving and even suggested making a funeral plan. By April 2023 toxins from my liver were building up in my brain which made me really aggressive and confused. I spent weeks in hospital, but didn’t have a clue who or where I was. Thankfully I had the liver transplant a month later. I couldn’t fault the service, but it was the most frightening experience of my life.

I now eat a healthy diet and exercise gently. I think I’m doing my liver donor proud.

I should have taken heed at the very beginning, rather than thinking it would never happen to me. There needs to be more awareness of the liver – you talk to people about liver disease and they say: “Shut up, you could be hit by a bus tomorrow”. Well, you’ll feel like you have been when you’re told you need a transplant.

Rebecca’s story

In 2017 I started training for a half marathon and was feeling really, really tired. Blood results showed a problem with my liver, and I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune condition called Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) and prescribed medication that I would have to take for the rest of my life.

In June 2020 I did a 5k run and couldn’t get out of bed for a week, then started turning yellow. I was admitted to hospital where I was told I had liver cancer – my twin boys were just seven years old then and I was scared they wouldn’t have a mum to grow up with. I was transferred to another hospital where a liver specialist reassured me that I didn’t have cancer, but another rare autoimmune condition called Autoimmune Hepatitis and prescribed a lot more medication.

I’ve learned to deal with it now, but it’s not been an easy ride. I have some light scarring on my liver but feel very lucky not to have cirrhosis. The weight gain from the steroids I take has been the hardest – more so on my face.

I decided to take part in the London Marathon for the British Liver Trust because the charity had helped me and my family. I knew I wouldn’t be able to run the whole Marathon because of the after-effects on my liver, so decided to walk instead. I completed it in 6 hours 21 minutes and nine seconds. There were times when it was hard, but it was an amazing day and I would definitely do it again.

The day after I needed something to hold onto when I walked because my legs didn’t belong to me, but three days later when I was walking the children to school they were saying “Mummy, slow down, you’re going too fast for us.”

If I have a full-on week or do too much, I perhaps feel tired for the next week or so, but I don’t let my conditions rule my life. Liver disease won’t stop me achieving what I want to achieve. Whatever your goal if you take small steps towards it, you’ll get there.

Louis’ story

Doctors discovered an abnormality on a scan before I was born – and within four days of my birth I was diagnosed with biliary atresia, a condition which the bile ducts in the liver are not properly formed. At just 12 days old I had the Kasai procedure, an operation to try to establish bile flow so that my liver could function normally. I was the second youngest person in the world to have had it and fortunately it was a success.

I’ve had endoscopies and clinic appointments ever since but had no symptoms. From the age of 13 I was running national and regional cross-country championships, at 14/15 I played for Salisbury City and I played a bit of tennis too. I am now a trainee teacher. I’ve been very involved with the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation over the years and done podcasts and blogs for them, as well as running the London Marathon.

When I was 21 doctors said it was looking increasingly likely that I would need a transplant within the next two years. I had always known it would happen, but when the reality actually hit, it came as a shock. I’m now on the transplant waiting list and have joined London Transplant Football Team. Everyone in the team has had a transplant, and not just livers, so we’re able to sympathise with each other and help each other. It’s good to be involved with them.

If you’ve been diagnosed with a liver condition, be kind to yourself and always remember you’re doing really, really well. Push yourself to stay fit and healthy if you can, but considering everything that people like myself have had to endure medically it’s important to look after your mental health too.

The Walbrook Club occupies charming Lilliputian Queen Anne-style townhouse built by the prominent property developer Rudolph Palumbo as his family office. It neighbours the Mansion House and Rothschild’s in the heart of the Square Mile. Over lunch at the Connaught Hotel between Lord Peter Palumbo, the former Chairman of the Arts Council, and Mark Birley, the genius behind the original Harry’s Bar, Mark’s Club and of course Annabel’s, the idea of converting the-then family office into a private members’ club was born. They shook hands and The Walbrook Club opened its doors in May 2000. The kitchens were run by the great Albert Roux of Le Gavroche. The third generation of the Palumbo family, Philip, runs the show.

We are a Modern Livery Company, celebrating our 25th year, supporting people, property and liberty.
