113Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers
The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers is the oldest optical body in the world, founded by Royal Charter of Charles I in 1629.
Back then, the only way to help people’s vision was to make a pair of spectacles. Now we can do so much more. So we don’t just make spectacles – we're about Eye Health and Eye Care. Our purpose is to support better vision and better senses, for life.
Our key message for all those involved and watching the Lord Mayor's Show is to LOOK AFTER YOUR VISION and get an eye examination. It’s easy to do but 1 in 6 people this year won’t make the appointment they really need.
London has been at the heart of innovation to help vision. We have great research teams here and a fabulous eye hospital, Moorfields but nearly a quarter of children between 4 & 16 have never had an eye exam and 74% of eye problems could have been better treated if they had been diagnosed earlier. At the other end of the scale, we all need more eye care as we get older. That’s why it’s so important to have regular eye examinations.
